Your ultimate guide to running in London
Whether it's a jog around the park or serious training loop around the capital, here are some top tips for London runners.
In the bustling metropolis of London, where fitness is not just a trend but a way of life, the options for staying active are as diverse as the city itself. While high-end gyms and upscale fitness classes abound, there's an equally enticing option that allows you to embrace the urban landscape while breaking a sweat – running through the city streets. With an abundance of lush green spaces and iconic landmarks, London is a runner's paradise. Join us as we unveil our top tips for making the most of your run in this vibrant and dynamic city.
Run early
There is no doubting that London is a busy city, so if you don’t want your run to be interrupted by tourists and commuters, it’s best to hit the streets early. From tranquil streets to stunning sunrises and a magical atmosphere as the city wakes up, an early run will allow you to experience a side of London that not many tourists get to see. It’s also the best time to take photos of the city as you’ll capture the city’s landmarks without the crowds and with the glow of the morning light.
Stay safe
When running in London it is important to dress appropriately. The city is famous for its rain and changeable weather. Be sure to check the forecast before heading out and bring some waterproofs if necessary. If running in the winter, wrap up warm and keep an eye out for ice and slippery pavements. And if venturing out in low light, opt for reflective clothing to keep yourself visible in the traffic.
Speaking of traffic – London roads are busy and, depending on what you’re used to, the traffic might surprise you by coming from the other direction. Make sure to stop at every road and wait for the green man at traffic lights before crossing.
Run with others
Running with others is another great way to keep safe. It’s also a good way to make the run more enjoyable. If you’re on a business trip, try organising a morning run with colleagues before you get stuck in the meeting room all day. You could also try a running tour to combine running with sightseeing. Go! Running Tours offer guided tours of the city, providing the perfect way to see the city on foot. Their local guides will pick you up from Corinthia London and show you the best the city has to offer, at a pace that suits you.
Plan your route
Although running can be a nice way to get lost in a city, if it’s your first time in London, we recommend planning your route. Corinthia London is ideally located next to the River Thames and numerous Royal Parks, offering access to some of the most popular routes amongst local runners. Ask our friendly team or check out websites such as MapMyRun and Strava for routes in the area. Avoid Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus during peak times, as these are the most congested shopping areas.
Explore the parks
There are plenty of parks to choose from, in close proximity to Corinthia London. Hyde Park, Green Park and St James’s Park may take your fancy or a little further afield, you’ll find Regent’s Park too. You could even try running the Diana Memorial Route, which takes in four of the Royal Parks in a figure-of-eight loop. The route gives you the chance to see many landmarks along the way, such as Kensington Palace, Buckingham Palace and Spencer House. To see other parts of the city, try Hampstead Heath to the north or Victoria Park to the east.
