Sudan is one of the most geographically diverse countries in Africa. Mountain ranges divide the deserts of the north from the swamps and rain forests of the south, and the River Nile splits the country from east to west. The capital, Khartoum, lies at the confluence of the Blue and White Niles, a location resonant with antiquity. The city is a feast for the senses, a melting pot of sights and sounds; a place too of magnificent sunsets, fascinating museums, mosques, lush Nile islands and a lively souk. Today, Khartoum is a city with grand designs and attracting international business as never before. Amid the progress, one aspect of the city remains unchanged; the warmth of its people who give Khartoum its character and ensure continuity in this most ancient of regions. The city is also known for its fusion of cuisines from across the African continent.
