Transport

Public transport is inexpensive and useful for negotiating the city’s seven hills and narrow streets. The fastest way to get around is by metro, which covers most of the city and operates until 1 a.m. Complementing this is a network of trams, buses, funiculars and a vertical elevator to connect the high and low areas of Lisbon.

Metered taxis are plentiful and affordable, and a popular means of transport. Pre-paid taxi vouchers give you peace of mind as well as fixed rates. As with many busy cities, trying to get around in a car is not recommended.

An electric train links the city to all the towns along the Portuguese Riviera, while a ferry service covers the Tagus River. Various transport passes are available, including a one, two or three-day Lisboa Card that allows unlimited transport (including trains to Sintra and Cascais), free entry to many of the museums and discounts on a number of attractions.
